Four Tips To Keep In Mind After A Fender Bender

With millions of drivers on the road, accidents seem to happen all over the place.  Here are four tips to ensure that your vehicle is properly fixed after you have been involved in a fender bender.

1. Choose your own body shop.
Insurance companies will usually refer some body repair shops but keep in mind that you can choose what body shop will do the repairs on your vehicle.  Some shops like to cut corners and will offer cheaper costs in order to entice insurance companies.  Do you research and check reviews on line with choosing which body shop you want to go with.

2. Avoid aftermarket parts!
Always ask about what parts are being replaced.  A lot of repair shops will use aftermarket parts in order to keep the cost down.  Aftermarket parts are typically cheap imitations with lesser quality.  Always ask for factory (or OEM) parts when something needs to be replaced.

3. Make sure the paint matches
Matching paint can be a difficult task.  Especially if there is a pearl finish or flake in the paint.  Whenever you arrive to the body shop to pick up your vehicle, ask them what parts are original and what was painted.  Take a few steps back and compare the originals to the freshly painted, sometimes it helps to put an object between the two to separate them.  Also, check for tape lines, over spray and orange peel.  Orange peel is when the clear coat dries into a bumpy finish.  Your paint should be smooth just like it was when it left the factory.

4. Check warning lights
Sometimes a wreck can cause your warning lights to go off.  If that happened after your wreck be sure to check and see if those issues were corrected.  Warning lights that are on can indicate that the car's on-board computer may need to be reprogrammed.
