Six Hundai Models Earn 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick Honors

Six models in the Hyundai line-up, the all-new Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe, all achieved the 2012 Top Safety Pick honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).  Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on “good” ratings in institute tests.  Winners must also have available Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.  The IIHS Top Safety pick ratings help consumers pick vehicles that offer a higher level of protection than federal safety standards require.  In 2010, the institute toughened the criteria for Top Safety Pick by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a “good” rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.

Hyundai Elantra wins ALG Best Resale Value Award for the second year in a row

Hyundai announced that the 2012 Elantra has received a Residual Value Award form ALG in the compact car segment.  ALG is the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation date.  ALG annually recognizes automakers’ outstanding achievements in producing new vehicles that are predicted to preserve the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period.  Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends.  Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that affect ALG’s residual value forecast.  The trade-in value guarantee is the newest addition to the Hyundai Assurance suite of programs.  It eliminates concern about depreciation by giving Hyundai owners a guaranteed value for their vehicle in months 24 through 48 of ownership.  The 2012 Elantra sets the bar in the compact sedan category offering a “class-above” midsize car interior volume, modern design, outstanding fuel economy, and loads of comfort and convenience features.

Cars.com Shootout

In a shootout done by Cars.com, five cars were so close in quality, features and drivetrain that it made it difficult for the judges to decide which car was the best.  Between the Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Honda Civic, and the Chevrolet Cruze, the Hyundai Elantra came in first place!  What the judges seemed to like the most about the Elantra was that the interior was tastefully designed, and not overdone, to match the fluidic design of the exterior.  Not only were they impressed by the total design of the car, they were also impressed by the smoothness of the ride and the quick response that it had.  All in all, the redesigned Elantra is a beautiful car that gets an impressive 40 mpg, has a base price of $17,760 and is one of IIHS to ten safety picks.

The NHTSA makes changes to their crash test rating and the Sonata scores a perfect 5 star overall crash rating!

The NHTSA changes their crash test, making it tougher to receive 5 stars.  A few of the changes are the all new side-pole test and a wider range of test dummy sizes.  The new side pole test simulates a car sliding sideways into a pole or tree and can reveal the weaknesses that are not shown in the traditional barrier test.  The other change is the different crash-test dummy sizes, which creates a visual of trauma occupants of all sizes would endure during a collision.  With all of these changes, the Hyundai Sonata received 5 stars overall while the Toyota Camry only received 3 stars and the Nissan Versa was at the bottom of the list, only scoring 2 out of 5 stars.
